Softener is a coating, not a cleaning

Liquid fabric softener works by depositing a thin cationic film onto fibre, which makes it feel slippery and smell perfumed. That film is also why towels become progressively less absorbent, why technical sportswear stops wicking, and why a softener drawer develops a grey residue that needs scrubbing. Dryer sheets do the same thing on a disposable substrate, and add a single-use product per load forever.

Wool dryer balls do the same job mechanically instead of chemically. As the drum turns, the balls lift and separate the fabric — which is what physically stops the tangling and balling that makes laundry come out stiff and creased — and the constant separation lets hot air reach more of the surface. That's why the measurable effect is shorter drying: typically 20 to 30 percent less time, which is the part that actually shows up on an electricity bill.

They also hold a small amount of moisture from the load and release it slowly as steam through the cycle, which relaxes creases without an iron. And because wool is naturally antistatic, static cling drops without any added chemistry.

How to use

Place all four balls in the dryer with the wet load. Use three for small loads and all four for full or bulky loads such as bedding and towels; more balls means more separation and a faster dry.

For fragrance, add 2–3 drops of essential oil to a single ball and let it absorb for a few minutes before starting — do not saturate it, and do not add oil directly to the drum.

Not for use with fabric softener in the same load — softener will coat the wool and progressively destroy its ability to absorb moisture, which is the mechanism that reduces creasing.
